The Powerstick wins "Best of Innovations" at CES 2007!

The Consumer Electronics Association today announced that Ecosol's premiere product, the Powerstick, has recieved a "Best of Innovations 2007" award from the Consumer Electronics Association. The Best of Innovations awards are given to the most highly honored products in each of the 31 product categories within the Innovations Design and Engineering Awards. Electricity generated from solar, wind, hydro and kinesthetic sources can be highly variable at any moment in time. This variability can present substantial challenges to incorporating these sources into your applications.

 

To overcome the issue of the intermittency of power, surplus energy must be collected into energy storage systems. Unfortunately, current battery systems are ill equipt to deal with variable DC inputs, there are too many ineficiencies all along the system.

 

 

 

OVERCOMING THE DOWNFALL OF CHEMICAL STORAGE

 

Variable DC inputs are just that...variable. Their voltage across time is in constant flux, spiking and dipping at random intervals. However, battery technologies are designed to accept electric power at a determined voltage: the battery voltage. Any energy collected at a voltage higher or lower than the battery voltage is lost and is refered to as over/under-voltage. This can be harmful to the battery and have serious implications such as overheating.

 

Our system overcomes the variable power input obstacle by monitoring and managing the energy flows to achieve optimal efficiencies in all voltage intensity conditions. This increased power gain makes variable input voltage applications commercially viable and efficient.

 

 

MAKING THE INCONSISTENT CONSISTENT

 

 

The Ecosol Energy Management Platform is an integrated set of components that manages the energy flow between the fluctuating DC input and the chemical storage. Through a combination of hardware, firmware, solid state and chemical storage, algorithms and charge electronics it converts variable DC input to regulated DC output.

 

The system is matched to the chosen chemical storage and corresponding battery voltage. Traditionally, any energy above or below the battery voltage line would be lost. However, the Ecosol Energy Management Platform captures and accumulates varying levels of electrical energy in suitable short-term storage means until the energy is of such a level that in can be efficiently transferred to at least one long-term storage device means, such as electro-chemical batteries. In essence, our system controls the flow by boosting the voltage when it is lower than the battery voltage and stepping down (buck) the voltage when it is higher. By controlling the flow the system optimizes energy gains while it protects and extends the life of the chemical storage.

CURRENT SOLAR TECHNOLOGY

 

A photovoltaic (PV) cell is a device that converts light energy into electrical energy. Solar panels are made from an array of photovoltaic cells. Photons from a light source hit the solar panel and are absorbed by semiconducting materials. As a result, electrons are knocked loose from their atoms, allowing them to flow through the material to produce electricity. An array of solar panels converts solar energy into a usable amount of direct current (DC) electricity. Unfortunately DC current is variable and therefore difficult to store efficiently.

 

 

OVERCOMING TECHNOLOGICAL INEFFICIENCIES

 

Traditional PV-powered battery systems are inefficient at warehousing energy in low light conditions. They experience the same difficulties as all variable DC input energy systems; overcoming the baseline voltage. Even when the battery voltage threshold is surpassed, these systems only reach peak efficiency when the input voltage is equal to the battery voltage. Until now, these systems have not been able to accommodate to the variations in light and voltage input that are characteristic of solar power.

 

The Ecosol® Energy Management System overcomes the variable power input obstacle by monitoring and managing the energy flow to achieve optimal efficiencies in all light conditions. This increased power gain makes PV-powered applications more commercially viable and efficient. The flexibility of the platform gives the ability to integrate any form of PV input. CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD & CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Andrew Kular is the founder, president and CEO of Ecosol. Under his leadership, Ecosol has grown from a single person with a vision to a team of investors, engineers, technologists, designers and support staff all committed to the same sustainable vision.

 

Prior to founding Ecosol, Andrew spent 15 years as a researcher & technologist in the fields of hydrology, limnology, metallurgy, and material science. During that time he had the privilege of working in some of Canada's premier research institutes including the Canada Center for Inland Waters, the Materials Technology Laboratories of CANMET, and the National Research Council.

DIRECTOR OF ENGINEERING & INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

As the director of engineering and industrial design at Ecosol, John has driven his team of engineers and designers to push the boundries of energy technology. The result has been discoveries in energy management and storage that are a full leap ahead of current systems. Working in conjunction with Andrew they developed the Ecosol® Energy Management Platform.

 

His sharp focus on smart and efficient design has translated into streamlined products that take nothing for granted. With over 20 years of experience in the technology industry, his approach is one of collaboration, user-centric design and optimization.

 

Before joining Ecosol in 2002, John worked on electrical engineering projects in the fields of medicine and aerospace. From Laborie Medical Technologies, to Atlantis Aerospace to WorldHeart Corp., he has always looked at technology as a venue for improving lives and furthering humanity. He also worked as a research associate at the Medical School of the University of Pennsylvania.

 

John holds both a bachelor and masters degree in Electronics Engineering/Instrumentation from the Shanghai University for Science and Technology. There he also spent 10 years as a research professor.
